Savannah’s Environmental Initiatives: A Commitment to Sustainability

Savannah, Georgia, is making significant strides in environmental sustainability through various initiatives aimed at preserving its natural resources and promoting ecological health.

Bee City USA Designation

In January 2025, Savannah was officially designated as a Bee City USA affiliate, underscoring the city’s commitment to protecting pollinators and fostering a biodiverse community. This initiative, sponsored by the Park & Tree Department, focuses on increasing native plant use, reducing pesticide application, and engaging residents in conservation efforts. The designation followed 19 months of advocacy led by Sade Shofidiya, founder of Foster Beelief and BEEnevolent, who now chairs the Savannah Pollinator Preservation Committee. Pollinators like native bees and butterflies are crucial for the reproduction of over 85% of flowering plants, contributing significantly to the health of our environment and food systems. Aquifer Recovery

In a remarkable environmental development, the Floridan aquifer beneath Savannah has experienced a significant rebound. Following the closure of International Paper, which reduced its water withdrawal by 10 million gallons daily, aquifer levels rose over 19 feet in some monitoring wells—the highest levels recorded in over 70 years. This recovery highlights the profound impact industrial activities have on our water resources and underscores the importance of sustainable water management practices. Office of Sustainability

The city’s Office of Sustainability plays a pivotal role in promoting a healthy environment and community lifestyle. Established to develop initiatives aligning with the city’s strategic plan, the office focuses on resource conservation, efficiency, and community engagement. Notably, in December 2021, the City Council unanimously adopted the 100% Savannah Clean Energy Plan, setting goals across energy efficiency, renewable energy, transportation, community development, and education. This annual event emphasizes Savannah’s dedication to environmental education and community involvement. Find out more about Earth Day Savannah.

Climate Resilience Efforts

Recognizing the challenges posed by climate change, Savannah is actively working on resilience strategies. The city faces risks such as sea-level rise, hurricanes, and increased tidal flooding. Efforts include expanding the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge and implementing the 100% Savannah Clean Energy Plan to mitigate these risks and protect the community.
